Back to Back Offensive Player of the Year 2020 and 2021

2021 - Congratulations to senior Trevor Moore on being named the Offensive Player of the Year in the Varsity Gold Division of the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League. Trevor led the Gold Division in almost every offensive category with 39 points, 23 goals, 16 assists, 5 power play goals, 2 shorthanded goals and a 2.28 points per game average. We are proud of you and all of your accomplishments Trev. #CFND.

2020 - The League has announced its 2020 AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League Annual Award winners.  CHSHA is pleased to announce that Varsity player Trevor Moore has been named Offensive Player of the Year for the Varsity Silver 1 Division.  The award honors the player who not only was a leader in offensive statistical categories, but also was a team leader on and off the ice.

2020 continued - Trevor certainly filled that bill for the Varsity team this year.  He dominated the league in all of the offensive categories--leading the league with 27 goals scored, 17 assists, 38 points, a 2.4 points per game average, 4 power play goals, 5 short-handed goals and 7 game winning goals.  He scored a hat trick in one period against the Prosper Eagles.  Trevor is a leader on and off the ice--serving as an Assistant Captain on the Varsity team, playing travel hockey with the Texas Warriors, volunteering through the Coppell Young Men’s Service League and working with special needs kids at Coppell High School.  We are incredibly proud of Trevor and congratulate him for his hard work being recognized by the League. Well done Trevor!

Back to Back State Champions

Cowboy Fight Never Dies has been the motto for Coppell Hockey since the Clubs’ inception in 1997 as one of the founding four members of the League. Today the Cowboys lived that motto in the 2021 State Championship game.

It certainly wasn’t how we would have drawn up winning today’s 2A State Championship against Denton County if you had asked us before the game—and it will likely go down in Coppell Hockey history as one of the greatest comebacks ever. The Cowboys gave up three quick goals through the mid-point of the first period and didn’t seem to have an answer for Denton County’s offensive onslaught. The Spartans came to play and were taking it to us.  Coach Chris Shakesby called a timeout to settle the troops. At the end of the first period, the Cowboys were down 0-3 and outshot 10-12. But Cowboy fight never dies.

Captain Trevor Moore broke the ice with his first goal of the game at the 11:52 mark of the 2nd period with an assist from Julian Peng.  But the Spartans answered quickly with another goal to take the 1-4 lead and Coach Shakesby pulled goalie Kyle Reeves and sent him to the locker room to try and change the momentum. Barret Allen entered the crease for the Cowboys.

Barret had turned in two very good outings in pool play helping to defeat Houston Memorial West and Plano Senior over the weekend. The first Denton County shot on net after the goalie change was a goal and Denton County took a commanding 1-5 lead at the 9:43 mark of the second period.  Late in the second period there was a scrum at the net as the Spartans tried to shove the puck in, injuring Barret’s knee in the process. He had to be helped to the locker room and subsequently went to the ER. Kyle Reeves had partially changed into his street clothes and had to get re-dressed in his goalie gear. While Kyle was getting dressed, the team skated with six skaters for two minutes and did not give up a goal. The Spartans did not appear to try to score while we were without a goaltender in a show of sportsmanship.

And then the Cowboys offense caught fire and the defense shut Denton County down from the middle of the second period on. Trevor Moore scored again with an assist from Brendan Hill with 1:13 left in the second period and the Cowboys were down 2-5 at the end of 2 with the shots on goal 22-20 in favor of Coppell. The Cowboys carried the momentum into the third period and scored two quick goals in the first five minutes to really put the pressure on the Spartans with goals from Brendan Hill (assisted by Trevor Moore and Jacob Smith) and a goal from Jacob Smith (assisted by Brendan Hill and Trevor Moore) with 13 minutes and 11:45 remaining respectively in the third period to make the score 4-5.

The play was back and forth for most of the rest of the third period and the Cowboys continued to trail 4-5. With a minute remaining in the game, Coach Shakesby pulled Kyle Reeves for the extra attacker and the Cowboys went to work.  After several icings by the Spartans the boys gained possession of the puck in the offensive zone and fired several shots on goal. In the waning seconds, Austin Thurman sent the puck to the point to defenseman Dylan Luu who unleashed a shot from the blue line through traffic which found the back of the net with :04 left in the game. The Cowboys forced a ten minute overtime.

Neither team scored in the first overtime. The Cowboys were able to kill off a roughing penalty midway though the overtime. The Spartans returned the favor with a too many men on the ice penalty in the second overtime period but the Cowboys could not convert.  Late in the second overtime, the Cowboys finally delivered as Jacob Smith drove the puck wide into the offensive zone and with a backhand pass fittingly found Trevor Moore near the back post for the goal with 5:31 remaining to complete the hat trick and win the game!  And the crowd went absolutely wild as Trevor skated to center ice, sliding the last fifteen feet on his knees with his arms raised high as his teammates converged on him—sticks and gloves flying in every direction.

And that’s the story of how the Coppell Cowboys won back to back 2A state championships in Coach Shakesby’s final season at the helm. Congratulations to Coach Shakesby and Coach DJ Graham, all of our players—Trevor Moore, Austin Thurman, Zach Richmond, Dakota Hilliard, Romy Thibeault, Barret Allen, Kyle Reeves, Brendan Hill, Jacob Smith, Erik Masengill, Dylan Luu, Julian Peng, Adam Hadi, Brenden Combs, Owen Raab, Calvin Houm, William Lehman, James Masengill, Liam Krauss, and Hamza Hussain. Thanks also to our families for all of their support especially during this crazy COVId season as well as all of the Hockey Honeys and fans. Finally, thanks to the Board for its service and support of this great organization!  We couldn’t do it without you.

Congratulations to the Denton County Spartans, Coach Ronnie Kennedy, and President Jeff Day on an outstanding championship game. It is a pleasure to play against a team that plays the right way and competes until the end.

Honoring #26 Jere Lehtinen

Jere Lehtinen and Austin Thurman

The Dallas Stars retired the jersey of Jere Lehtinen on Friday, November 24th when they hosted the Calgary Flames.  Jere’s number 26 was the fifth jersey to be retired by the franchise and the third retired since the team moved to Texas. Lehtinen played his entire fourteen year career with the Stars and was one of the game’s great two-way forwards. He was a three-time Selke Trophy winner, a four-time Olympic medalist and a Stanley Cup Champion.

While Lehtinen helped introduce the city of Dallas to the game of hockey, he also had a profound impact on youth hockey in Coppell and the DFW area.  Jere and his family lived in Coppell during his playing days. His son was learning to skate and play hockey at the time, and Jere often volunteered as an assistant coach for mini mite, mite and squirt teams at the Dr. Pepper Stars Center in Farmers Branch and Valley Ranch. Lehtinen, never one to seek the spotlight, quietly helped teach the kids the fundamentals and to love to play the game of hockey. Many of the boys took to wearing Jere’s signature yellow skate laces during their practices and games.

Lehtinen’s impact on youth hockey continues to this day with former mini mite, mite and squirt hockey players scattered throughout various Tier 1 and Tier 2 travel, house league and high school teams in the area, including Coppell High School Hockey players Trevor Moore, Vineet Madur, Erik Masengill, Austin Thurman, Sam Norris, Donovan Burdette, Jacob Smith, and Gibson Duhe.  Congratulations to Jere on the retirement of your number 26 with the Dallas Stars, and thanks for all you did to encourage and support the development of youth hockey in Coppell and DFW.

Kelly Thurman

Congratulations to the Class of 2017!
